Frank Ewin "Tug" McGraw Jr. (August 30, 1944 – January 5, 2004) was a colorful Major League Baseball relief pitcher and the father of country music singer Tim McGraw. He was born in Martinez, California and gained sports stardom during the New York Mets World Series victory in 1969 and is remembered for coining the motto "Ya Gotta Believe" during the New York Mets' run for the 1973 World Series. He is also renowned as the star reliever who pitched the final strike for the 1980 World Champion Philadelphia Phillies, which is their only World Series Championship in team history.
