seismograph

Seismometer is of Greek origin an comes from Seism - "the shakes" and Meteo - "I measure" are instruments that measure and record motions of the ground, including those of seismic waves generated by earthquakes, nuclear explosions, and other seismic sources. Records of seismic waves allow seismologists to map the interior of the Earth, and locate and measure the size of these different sources.

Trivia about seismograph

  • Prince Boris Golitzen invented an electromagnetic one of these, & was probably paid "Richter" scale
  • Geologists use this earthquake measuring instrument to figure out where to drill for oil
  • In 132 Zhang Heng developed a crude one of these instruments that registers earthquakes
  • To find gas and oil, geologists may set off an explosion & measure the waves using this instrument
  • From the Greek for "earthquake writer", this instrument records any Earth movement
  • A strong motion accelerograph, a type of this device, records shaking too strong for sensitive ones
  • Around 132 A.D. Chinese scientist Chang Heng invented an early form of this earthquake detector
  • This machine takes its name from the Greek for "earthquake writer"
  • The first one of these was invented in China in 132 A.D.; a water spillage type was invented in 19th century Italy
